Green Grass has Arrived

5/4/2012

The weather has given our animals what they have been waiting for all winter....GRASS.  The cows have been grazing daily.  We strip graze our patures.  That means we give the cows only enough new grass to eat each day.  Each morning I move the fence to reveal a new section of pasture.  They love it and the pastures go a little farther that way too.  Otherwise, the cows would tramp down half of the grass before they eat it.  The chickens are out as well.   They have been happily digging in the woods and snatching the bugs as they hatch.  Our egg production has increased as well as the brightness of our yolks.  Nothing makes a more colorful egg than grass.  The hogs are out on pasture doing some plowing for me.  They love clovers and grasses.  Of course, they love to dig too.  I will upload a picture soon of their handy work.  Our garden this year is in their field from last year.  The soil is dark brown and fertile.  There are very few weeds as well.  We finally got the broilers outside.  They are getting ready to process in a couple weeks.  We have 90 more started and another batch on the way next Thursday.  We will be planting our first sweet corn this weekend.  The field corn will go in in a couple weeks, probably around the 20 of May.  With the lengthening daylight, we have been working hard to get some projects finished and fences built.  We are eager to get some more fence up as it makes our grazing program run so much smoother.
